Chapter 7: Table Seven

My father hosted the Friday dinner for the Ferrantes as if nothing had happened.

Twenty-four places were laid in the dining room, with the good china and the white candles, and the family sat down in their usual order.

Renzo was at my father's right.

Gemma's father was at Nonna's right, with his hands folded and his face unreadable.

Camilla sat halfway down the table in a blue dress, with her ring on her finger.

Gemma and I walked in late.

She wore the grey dress from Sunday. I wore the suit from the garment sleeve.

Thirty heads turned.

"Nico," my father said, and he didn't stand. "I don't remember inviting you."

"I did," said Gemma's father, from his chair.

My father's smile held.

"Then please. Sit. We're all family."

We didn't sit.

Gemma walked the length of the table to the head, where my father had his glass raised for his toast, and I walked a step behind her.

She took the cream envelope out of her handbag and laid it on the cloth beside his plate.

"This is yours, Mr. Tessaro," she said.

"I don't know what that is."

"Then you won't mind if I read it to your family."

She took out the cashier's check and held it up with two fingers so the candlelight shone through it.

"Two hundred thousand dollars from Tessaro Provisions, payable to me. It was left in my bag at a bridal shop on Thayer Street, in front of two of your sisters and the owner."
