Chapter 19: Turning the Tables

Arlo was out the bait-shop door before the old man could rewind the tape.

I caught him at the truck.

"Where are you going?"

"Downtown. To his tower. I'm going to put that tape in his hand."

"And then what? Hit him? In his lobby, with his cameras?" I put my hand over his on the door handle. "He'd love that. He'd have you on the news by lunch."

"He tried to burn my pier, Noelle. With my kid's horses on it."

"Give me till noon," I said. "I used to do this for a living. Let me do it right."

He looked at me a long time.

Then he put the keys in my hand.

"Noon."

At ten, Kessington Global put out a statement.

I read it on my phone at the counter while the fire captain drank our coffee.

Kessington Global is saddened by the fire at the derelict Gull Point arcade.

We are grateful no one was hurt.

This tragedy shows again that the aging pier is unsafe, and we urge the city to act quickly.

"Can I borrow your TV?" I asked the old man.

At noon, the bait-shop TV sat on a hand truck in the middle of the pier, plugged into an orange extension cord.
