Chapter 12: The Whole Truth

Mitch drove me to the river and parked facing the water.

The convention center was still behind us, and the snow was coming down in the headlights.

He turned the engine off and put both hands on the wheel.

"I'd like to ask you something," he said. "I should have asked it two months ago."

"Ask."

"What was he like?"

I looked at him.

"Your father," Mitch said. "You went to see him on the twenty-fourth and I never asked who he was."

Nobody in my family had asked me that since the funeral.

My throat closed, and then it opened.

"He was a quiet man who fixed things," I said. "He built the porch swing on our house with his own hands. He left the porch light on every night, even when everyone was home, so that if anyone was out, they'd see it from the street."

Mitch did not move.

"He said it was the only rule. Somebody is always glad you came home."

"That's your line."

"It's his. I wrote it down."

I pulled my sleeve over my hand and wiped my eyes.

"When I was twenty, he had been sick for a year. I started the page from that porch swing because I couldn't sit in the hospital all day. I took pictures of the light. I wrote what he said."

The heater ticked.

"He died when I was twenty-three. A week before that, he told me that I should file the name in my own name. I'd already done it. He said, 'Good. Keep one thing that's only yours.'"

"Your mother never knew why."

"She thought I forgot to hand it over. She thought I was too nice."
