Chapter 17: Marge's Garage

Marge's garage held one box truck, three space heaters, and forty-one people on folding chairs.

It was Thursday night, and the door was rolled down against the cold.

A woman from the packing line had brought a pot of chili.

The forklift driver had brought a card table and set it up at the front.

"Standing room," he said, when I came in. "We're at capacity."

I walked to the card table with my notebook under my arm.

Every face in that garage had been on my packing floor for years.

None of them had ever been in the lobby photograph, and neither had I.

"Thank you for coming," I said.

"It's Marge's garage," the forklift driver said. "We'd have come for the chili."

Somebody laughed, and the room loosened.

"I'll say this plainly," I said. "I own the name Porch Light. I own the page. I signed a license with Callow & Co for ten million dollars, and I can have it made by anyone I choose."

Nobody spoke.

"I'm choosing you."

A woman near the back raised her hand.

"Choosing us to do what? We don't have a building."

"You have Marge's garage tonight," I said. "And on Monday, Callow pays its first installment into my account. It goes into one place, and that's your wages."

"Whose company is it?"

"Mine, to start. I want it to be ours."

"What about health insurance?" the woman said.
