Chapter 5: The Window

"I'm not in Florida," I said to Louisa. "Ask Mom what she handed me on Friday."

Louisa looked at Mom.

Mom said, "Louisa, sweetheart, we'll talk upstairs."

Louisa stood holding the two coffees and did not drink either one.

Mitch did not move his hand from my arm until I stepped toward the elevator.

Trent stepped aside, because the warehouse crew had come two steps closer and it was clear he was going to lose.

I took my camera and my father's notebooks out of the bottom drawer and carried them down in my arms.

Nobody stopped me.

Mitch was waiting by the doors with his coat over his arm.

"Your mother can reschedule," he said. "I'd like to show you something. It's twenty minutes away."

"Is this the something a man says before a deal?"

"It's the something a man says before a window."

I looked at the notebooks.

I looked at Marge, who was already walking toward her break room with her chin up.

"Go," Marge called back. "I've got a shift to run."

The Callow & Co flagship on High Street had six floors and a doorman in a long red coat.

It was Saturday before Christmas, and the sidewalk was shoulder to shoulder with people carrying bags.

The Porch Light display was in the first window.

A white throw folded over an old wooden porch swing. Four candles in stoneware jars. A hand-lettered sign with a line from my own page: Somebody is always glad you came home.

I had written that at five in the morning in a cold kitchen.
