Chapter 7: Christmas Eve
My mother's dining table held a dozen people and twenty candles, each one a Porch Light.
I watched the flames from my seat at the far end, because it was easier than looking at her.
My aunt sat to my left, and my uncle across from her.
The pastor from Mom's church was at Mom's right hand, and two cousins and their husbands filled the middle.
Trent sat at the head of the table beside Mom, in a green sweater, with the keys to his car set by his water glass.
Louisa sat next to me, and under the tablecloth her knee was pressing against mine.
I had brought a pen, as asked.
I had also brought a folder.
"Before we eat," Mom said, and the table went quiet, "I want to say how glad I am that we're all together."
She took off her reading glasses and held them in her lap.
"We've had a difficult week. A family business is a family first. Willa and I have had a misunderstanding."
My aunt looked at me. Then she looked at her plate.
"Willa, sweetheart," Mom said. "There's a paper by your plate."
There was.
It was the same white page, with the same number, and a clean line for my name.
Beside it, a pen with the company logo on it.
"I'd like you to sign it tonight, in front of the people who love you," Mom said. "It's only a formality. It means we've agreed to be a family again. Nobody will ever collect it."
"Then why does it have a number on it?" my uncle said.
