Chapter 23: Rule Fourteen

The east room looked smaller than I remembered.

It had a narrow bed, a window onto the garden, and a pine dresser where I had once kept a hundred rules folded in a drawer.

Jasper stood in the doorway with a bunch of wild asters in his fist.

He had picked them himself, and he had dirt on his cuffs.

"I wasn't sure which way you meant it," he said. "The courting. I brought flowers anyway."

"Rule fourteen," I said. "You sleep in the east room, alone."

"I remember," he said. "I wrote it."

"It's ended." I took the flowers and put them in the water glass on the dresser. "New rule fourteen. You sleep in the east room, and you don't sleep alone."

He crossed the floor in two strides.

He stopped a hand's width from me, with his arms rigid at his sides.

"May I?"

"Rule nine is still in force," I said. "Only now it's mine. You touch me when I tell you."

"Touch me."

He put both hands in my hair and kissed me hard.

I backed him against the door and pulled his shirt over his head.

I got my own off, and my jeans, and I pushed him toward the bed.

He sat, and I climbed onto his lap, and we stayed that way for a moment with our foreheads together and our breath mixed.

"I'm glad you said yes," he muttered.

"I said yes to the courting."

"I'll take the courting."

I laughed, and kissed him, and he laid me down on the blanket.
