Chapter 14: What the Blood Wanted

"Out," Evander said to the kneeling hall. "All of you."

His voice was ragged, and he was leaning on his friend with half his shirt burned away.

Nobody argued.

His friend helped him up the stairs, and Gavin followed us as far as the landing and then sat down on the top step with his head in his hands.

"I'll watch the door," he said. "Go."

The bedroom door shut behind us, and the fever hit me all at once.

It was worse than before.

My skin hurt everywhere his did not touch me, and the mark on my wrist burned white.

He felt it too.

He stood in the middle of the room with his chest black and healing, shaking.

"Seren. I can't think. If you want me to stop..."

"I don't."

"I took too much."

"You took what I gave you."

I crossed the floor and put both hands on his bare chest.

The black was fading under my palms, and the skin was cool and then hot.

"Take your clothes off," I said. "Now."

He made a rough, helpless sound, and then he had me against the door.

His mouth was on mine, hard, and I kissed him back with teeth.

I could taste my own blood on his tongue.

It should have disgusted me.

I pulled him closer by his belt.

He tore the green dress down the middle.

I heard the seam go, and the cold air hit my skin, and I did not care.

"I liked that dress," I said against his mouth.

"I'll buy you forty more."

He lifted me and carried me to the bed, and he laid me down on the sheets with both hands shaking.

He looked at the cut on my palm.

He kissed it.

He kissed my wrist, where the mark burned, and the burning went soft and sweet.

Then he knelt over me and pulled my panties down my legs.
