Chapter 11: No Rules

The thread pulled again, and I doubled over on the sleeping bag.

It was a cold hook behind my ribs, dragging me south toward a man I had refused.

"Breathe," Tobias said. He was beside me before I saw him move. "It's trying to find the other end."

"Make it stop."

"I can't cut it. I can give it something else to pull against."

"What?"

He knelt on the cot and put his palm flat over my breastbone, where the thread was.

His heat went into me, and the cold hook loosened.

I let out a sound I had never made.

"Better?" he said.

"Yes."

"Good." He started to take his hand away.

I caught it and held it where it was.

"You touched me," I said.

"Nina."

"You said you never break the rule. You touched my neck. You held my hands. You've been looking at my mouth for two weeks."

"Three," he said, very low. "I started the day I saw the picture in your file."

"Then stop pretending this is first aid."

He closed his eyes.

"I'm your professor."

"You're the man who put a contract in my hand, stood on a stair and told me I was worth saving. I'm twenty-four. I know what I want."

He opened his eyes.

"Say it, then."

"I want you to touch me," I said. "All of me. I don't want to be the easy one tonight. I want to be the one you can't stop thinking about."

He made a sound in his chest, half a laugh and half a groan.

"You are," he said. "God help me, you are."

I pulled his jacket off his shoulders.
