Chapter 4: Rosa

My mother did not hug me.

She looked at my duffel bag, my coat and my face, in that order, and opened the passenger door of the sedan.

"Get in, Nina."

"I'm fine standing."

"Get in the car. People are looking."

They were. Three students had stopped on the path, and one of them had his phone up again.

I stayed where I was.

"Mrs. Corvino," Tobias said behind me, from the doorway. "Ms. Corvino has a nine-thirty meeting."

My mother's eyes went over him and found nothing she wanted. "And you are?"

"Her employer, as of ten minutes ago."

She didn't answer him. She turned her whole body toward me, which was how she always shut a door.

"Alexander is in the Alpha's infirmary," she said. "He hasn't eaten. He can't shift. The Alpha called me at two in the morning, and I had to listen to that man ask me what my daughter had done to his son."

"I rejected him, Mom. I said it out loud, with a hundred people watching."

"I saw the video."

"Then you saw what Alexander and Giada did first."

"It was a prank."

"He has her bite on his neck."

My mother's mouth went thin. "Bonds turn. It's nobody's fault. Your sister didn't plan it."

"She filmed it."

"She is twenty-two. She films everything."

I laughed, and it came out wrong.

My mother stepped closer and lowered her voice, which was worse than shouting.

"Here is what will happen. Giada has already said she'll forgive you. You will go to the Alpha's house this afternoon. You will record a message for Alexander and say you were overwrought and tired and you didn't mean it."
