Chapter 14: The Raid

Hollin Cairn stands on a bare moor, nine black stones round a mound as high as a house.

We came over the ridge at first light with sixty palace riders and a frost that cracked under the horses.

The forty omegas sat in a ring at the foot of the mound.

Iron staples were driven into the stones, and every woman's left wrist was chained to one.

They were thin and grey, and they did not look up.

Twenty men in Council grey stood between us and the chains with their swords drawn.

Their captain was a red-faced man with a bought crescent on his wrist that I could see from the saddle.

"The Council holds these wards, Majesty," he said. "You are trespassing."

"I am the King," said Cassian.

"You were the King until yesterday."

Cassian got down from his horse.

He had no ring and no crown and one black line creeping up out of his collar, and he walked toward twenty swords.

"Captain," he said. "Look at the women you're guarding."

The captain didn't.

"Look at them," said Cassian, quietly.

One of the omegas had lifted her head.
