Chapter 9: Two-Step
On Saturday night the dance hall outside Breaux Bridge was so full the floor bounced.
The band played on a plywood stage at the back, a fiddle, an accordion and a triangle.
The whole parish two-stepped in a long slow circle under strings of colored bulbs.
Margot was at her great-aunt's again, asleep on a cot with a nightlight.
I had put on my mother's green dress, the one with the wide skirt.
Seb had stood in the kitchen doorway and said nothing at all for a long moment.
"You look wrong," he finally said.
"Wrong how?" I asked.
"Like I can't take you anywhere I'd like to take you."
"Where would you like to take me?"
"Out of the dress," Seb said.
"Not in front of the old men."
I laughed, and he smiled, and it was the first full smile I had seen on him.
He held out his arm.
At the hall, Blake had a table at the front with six of the old men in their good jackets, and they watched us come in.
"The married couple!" Blake shouted.
"Dance, dance, let the girl show us what she's got."
I took Seb's hand and led him onto the floor.
"I don't dance," he said.
"I know."
"I haven't danced in four years."
"I know that too," I said.
"Put your hand on my back."
He put his hand on my back.
It was large and warm, and it settled on the curve of my spine as though it had been there before.
I took his other hand in mine.
The fiddle started a waltz, slow and aching, and I stepped into it.
