Chapter 11: Two Keys

I did not go home that night.

I called it home in my head, on the long drive back down the plain with Ximun's driver at the wheel and the white SUV's dust still in my teeth.

It was the stone house at Owyhee, with the bolt on my door that I never used now.

Ximun was in the kitchen when I came in.

He took one look at my face and put down his knife.

"Tell me," he said.

I told him.

I told him about the cabinet, the new brass lock, and the bank man who came to the back door on Fridays with an envelope.

I told him what Idoia had called me in front of the crew.

He listened with his back against the counter and his arms folded.

When I said bought wife, his jaw went hard.

"I'll bury her," he said.

"No," I said.

"Amaia."

"You'll do nothing.

"You said you would let me open it."

"I did."

"Then keep your word.

"I want the key."

"You don't have it," he said.

"I do."

I opened my fist.

In my palm lay a small brass key on a plain steel ring, with a tag stamped D.

It was warm from my hand.

"She brought me a winter coat the day she came here," I said.

"I never put it on.

"This afternoon I found this in the pocket."

I turned the key over.

"She has one on her own ring, and she had a spare.
