Chapter 17: The Chapel
Idoia left the yard at noon with her folder, and I told her I would be at the bank on Friday at two.
She thought she had won.
I let her think it for the whole drive south, in the back of Ximun's truck, with the green ledger on my knees.
Ximun did not speak.
He sat beside me with his hat on his thigh and his hand flat on the seat between us, an inch from mine.
He did not move it.
Ximun's man had put my father in a hotel room on the Block the night we opened the drawer.
A boy sat at the door to bring him his meals.
My father had not asked to go home, and nobody had offered.
At the stone house Garazi met us in the yard with her keys in her fist.
"The chapel is warm," she said, to nobody in particular.
"I lit the stove."
She went into the kitchen and shut the door.
I understood that I had been told something.
At dusk I walked out to the chapel alone.
The tin cross stood black against a long orange sky.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, on the shelf under the plaster saint, the candles Garazi lit every night burned in a row.
Ximun was sitting on the front pew with his elbows on his knees and his black tie wound around his fist.
He looked up when I came in.
"I'm afraid I'll ruin it," he said.
"The dinner, on Saturday.
"I'll say the wrong thing, or I'll put my hand on someone, or I'll look at her and forget what I promised."
"What did you promise?" I said.
"To stand behind you and not touch you."
