Chapter 11: Power Out
The storm came in off the lake that night, and the power went out at nine.
It went all at once, in the middle of a sentence, the lamps and the refrigerator and the hum in the walls.
The house stood in blackness.
Wind threw snow against the windows in handfuls.
I came down the stairs with a candle and found him already at the hearth, on one knee, feeding split birch to a fire he had built in the time it took me to find matches.
The light moved on the stone walls.
It made him look younger.
"The generator is at the gate," he said.
"Ilija's men will not bring it up in this.
"We have wood until Thursday."
"Then we're fine," I said.
"We are," he said, and he did not turn around.
I put the candle down on the mantel.
I sat on the rug in front of the fire, close enough to feel it on my face, with my knees drawn up.
He sat down on the other side of the hearth.
For a while neither of us said anything.
The storm kept hitting the house.
"Tell me something true," I said.
"Anything.
"One thing."
"I told you I would not tell you why," he said.
"Not that," I said.
"Something else."
He rubbed his hands together.
He looked at the fire for a long time, and when he spoke his voice was flat and careful.
"My father was drowned in this lake when I was twelve," he said.
"He went out in November on a tug that was too old.
