Chapter 14: What He Gave

The sacristy was a small room behind the iconostasis that smelled of wax and old wool.

The priest had put us there, shut the door, and gone without a word to hold the Liturgy together.

I could hear it through the wall.

They were singing again, thin and ragged, because the parish did not know what else to do.

I sat on the vestment chest in my coat with the pad shut in both hands.

Xander stood with his back against the door.

He had put the watch on again.

"You will want me to say it in order," he said.

"I want it said plainly," I said.

"Then I will say it the way you would read it back."

He told it.

I have taken down a great many men who said they wanted to tell the truth.

None of them told it without once reaching for a kind word.

On the second of December, a little before eleven, the gate guard at the ore dock had rung him in the office.

Tomasz Wierzba was standing at the gate in his dock jacket.

He had walked there from the foreman's shed and asked for the Pilot by name.

"He could barely stand," Xander said.

"He had a hand on the fence.

"He said, Xavier, I have an hour of legs and I want to spend it on you."

They had gone down to the number-three slip, where nobody would hear.
