Chapter 7: Lock It
He did not move.
He stood in the hall with his hands in the air an inch from my waist, and he let me kiss him until I stopped.
When I stopped he was breathing as if he had run up the hill.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?" he said.
"Where I'm allowed."
"Anywhere," he said.
"Everywhere.
"You decide."
I took his wrist.
I pulled him down the hall to the second door on the left, the one with the brass bolt, and I took him through it and shut it behind us.
I shot the bolt.
It was my lock, on the inside.
His eyes went to it and came back to me, his expression softening before he composed it again.
"Take off your coat," I said.
He had come in from the lake in his long dark coat and never taken it off.
He shrugged out of it and laid it over the chest.
He stood there in a black sweater and dark trousers and his plain steel watch, with the lamp lighting one side of his face.
"Sweater," I said.
He pulled it over his head.
He was broad and hard in the chest, with dark hair across it going gray, and across his left ribs ran a long white scar as thick as a rope.
I put my hand on it.
His skin was hot.
"Winch cable," he said.
"I was nineteen."
"It looks like it hurt," I said.
"It did," he said.
I moved my hand up over his heart.
It was slamming under my palm.
"I'm not going to be gentle," I said.
"I'm angry, and I'm frightened of you, and I want this anyway.
"I want you to know all three."
