Nadia's POV

He was in the kitchen at seven with a pot of coffee and two cups, and he had put the watch back on.

I stood in the doorway.

I had my pad in my hand.

"You left," I said.

"At four."

"I went to the study," he said.

"You took the watch," I said.

"It was mine," he said.

"I wanted it back."

It was a strange thing for him to say.

I wrote it down, standing up, in front of him.

He watched me do it.

"Come into town with me," he said.

"I would like to introduce my wife."

I looked at him.

It had been one night since the bolt and his mouth.

I had slept with him once, and he had not touched me since that night, because I had not touched him.

I had walked around that house with the memory of him on me every minute.

I had stared at the back of his neck at breakfast.

I had listened to his steps down the hall.

He had kept his word to the letter, and it made me want to bite him.

"Fine," I said.

The harbor in the morning was iron and white.

The ice lay out in the bay in plates, and the last ore boat of the season stood at the dock with her hull rust-red and her deck lit, loading.
