Graciela's POV

I said it on the stairs, in the middle of the afternoon, with the housekeeper in the next room.

He had come back from Ottavio's meeting with his jaw set and his tie loose.

He had said nothing about it.

He had kissed my forehead and told me to stay in the house.

I stood there with something that had been in my chest since the Lincoln, and it came out.

"You married me as bait."

Luca stopped on the third step.

"I know what I did," he said.

"You don't," I said.

"You've never said it to my face.

"You sat in a car and told me you agreed to a marriage for a ledger, and then you gave me terms, and I've been a good girl.

"I have eaten your food and slept in your house, and I let you put your mouth on me.

"All that time I was a signature on a page you thought would catch a thief."

"Graciela," he said.

"Did you think about my name?" I said.

"The week you signed.

"Did you once ask who I was?"

He came down the steps.

I did not back away.

He stopped a foot from me, and I saw that he was not going to defend himself.

He had decided that on the stairs.

"No," he said.

"I didn't.

"I thought of you as a door into a room I needed to open.

"I didn't ask what you wanted, or what it would cost you, or whether you'd wake up in my house frightened.
