Chapter 11: The Vault
The second contract was one page long, and it sold me again.
Luca read it standing in the courtyard with the rain dripping off the tile roof and my father waiting by the fountain, his lawyer at his elbow in a cheap gray suit.
It said that Graciela Rosalia Montalvo, on the advice of her father, assigned the Rosalia note to Anselmo Montalvo in trust, for a consideration of one dollar.
Luca tore it in half.
He tore the halves in half and dropped them into the fountain.
"Mr. Ricci," said the lawyer.
"That is a legal instrument."
"It's a napkin," said Luca.
"Take my wife's father home."
My father looked at the paper scraps floating on the water, and at me standing on the loggia with my arms folded.
He did not say a word.
He left.
I did not feel anything, and that frightened me a little.
An hour later, Luca put a key ring in my hand.
It was heavy, black iron, six keys, the oldest of them green with age.
"Nonna gave them to me this morning," he said.
