Luca moved before I did.
He stepped across the vault and stood between me and the doorway, with his shoulders squared against the light and his hands loose at his sides.
He didn't raise a hand.
He didn't reach into his coat.
He was a big man, and he took up the whole doorframe.
"Ottavio," he said.
"It's late."
"It is," said Ottavio.
"I came to find you, Padrino.
"The drivers said you'd taken Graciela somewhere alone.
"I was worried."
"You came with two men," Luca said.
"I am careful," said Ottavio.
The man on the left shifted his weight.
I knew him.
He was the driver who had smoked while his boss held a gun on me on the pier.
I looked at his face, and he looked at the floor.
"What's in the vault?" said Ottavio, pleasantly.
"My father's old desk," said Luca.
"May I see?" said Ottavio.
"No," said Luca.
The word fell into the cedar room and stayed.
Ottavio's smile did not change, but his eyes moved past Luca to me, and to the shape of the envelope under my dress.
I put my hand flat over my heart.
"You've been very busy," Ottavio said.
