Chapter 13: Don't Stop
The Quarter House kitchen was dark at midnight except for the light over the stove.
I stood at the counter in my nightgown with a glass of water I wasn't drinking.
I had not slept.
On Saturday I would climb a chair in front of two hundred people and say a dead man's name out loud.
My whole body hummed with it, and with something else I'd stopped pretending was only nerves.
I heard him on the back stairs before I saw him.
He came in barefoot in his trousers and a white undershirt, and he stopped in the doorway when he saw me.
"I thought you were asleep," Luca said.
"I thought you were."
"I was reading the invoices again."
"Every one?" I said.
"Fourteen hundred and some," he said.
"I wanted to see if the number changed."
"Did it?" I said.
"It got worse," he said.
He crossed to the sink and filled a glass.
He drank it standing with his back to me, and I watched the muscles move under the thin cotton of his shirt.
I put my glass down.
"Luca," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"Turn around."
He turned.
His gray eyes were tired and very steady.
I walked across the tile until there was a foot of air between us.
"You promised something in the church," I said.
"I did."
"You said you wouldn't touch me until I told you to."
"I haven't," he said.
"You've touched me nine times since Wednesday," I said.
"Every one of them because I said so."
"That's the promise," he said.
"It's the only one I've ever been proud of."
I took the glass out of his hand and set it on the counter.
"So don't stop," I said.
His breathing changed.
"Gracie."
"You promised not to touch me till I said," I said.
"I'm saying.
"So don't stop."
He did not move.
I saw what it cost him.
His hands hung at his sides, and the knuckles had gone pale.
