Chapter 14: The Signature
In the morning he was at his desk before I woke.
I found him there with the shutters open and the bay going silver behind him.
I had slept an hour in his bed, with the first grey light on the wall.
I came down in his white shirt with my hair loose, and his study door was standing open.
The room was dark wood and green leather, with a safe in the wall and no window on the street.
The shelf where the stolen ledgers had been stood bare.
"Sit," Luca said.
"Not there."
He pointed at the leather chair on the near side of the desk, the one meant for a man who came to ask a favor.
I sat in it.
He put two papers in front of me.
Each one was typed, with my name printed under a line at the bottom and a pen lying across the page.
"What is this?" I said.
"The first is the lease on the Channelside warehouse," he said.
"The second is the shipping licence of the Ricci house, the one that lets us put a crate on a ship out of the Port of Tampa."
I read them aloud under my breath, as I read everything, and heard each word land.
They did not say loaned or held.
They said assigned, from Luca Vincenzo Ricci to Graciela Rosalia Montalvo, for no consideration.
"I don't understand," I said.
"Three days ago you said you'd call the note on Saturday," Luca said.
"If you win, those are yours by law, because the note says so.
"I'm not going to wait for the room to make me give them up."
"Luca, that's your whole house."
"It's your mother's house," he said.
