Chapter 19: Saturday

Luca's POV

I did not sleep on Friday night, and neither did she, and neither of us said anything about it.

At five on Saturday morning I stood in the courtyard with the gate guard and watched the sky go from black to the color of a bruise.

My phone had rung three times in an hour.

The first call was from the man I had put on the factory.

He said two cars had come at four in the morning and eight men had gone in with a key.

They had not forced a door.

They had walked up to the third floor as if they owned it, and they were still standing in the reading hall with their arms folded.

They had gone down to the vault, which stood open and empty.

"It's empty?" I said.

"Padrino, we moved it Thursday," my man said, almost amused.

"Like you told us.

"Everything's at your grandmother's.

"They're standing in a room full of nothing."

I thanked him and hung up.

The second call was from the dock.

The gray-bearded stevedore said four hundred men were holding.

The shipping line had asked for a meeting and been told it would be after ten.

The third call was Ottavio's house.

I let it ring.

I had known that voice for seven years, and I would hear it once more with two hundred others listening.
