Chapter 22: Mine

That night the Quarter House was so quiet I could hear the water move in the fountain.

We had eaten Nonna's soup at her bungalow in Seminole Heights.

She had made us eat it at the long table, just the three of us, with the whole house empty around us.

She had fallen asleep over her coffee at eight o'clock, small and straight in her chair.

Luca had carried her to bed himself.

Now it was eleven, and the courtyard was blue with moonlight.

I sat on the rim of the fountain in my green dress with my shoes off and my feet in the cool water.

I heard him come out through the glass doors.

He had taken off his jacket and his tie, and the white shirt I had ironed so badly hung open at the throat.

He sat down beside me and did not say anything.

For a while we watched the water.

"The keys are in my hand," I said.

I had them in my lap, the heavy ring he had given me in the kitchen.

I had not given them back.

"I know," he said.

"I could walk out the gate tonight."

"You could."

"I'm not going to," I said.

He turned his face toward me.

His eyes were very gray in the moonlight, and very steady.

"What do you want, Graciela?" he said.

"Tell me.

"I mean all of it.

"The house, the licence, the lease.

"It's yours.

"I want to know what you want it for."
