Chapter 12: The Name-Day Supper

Sixty people sat down to the name-day supper in the long hall behind the Pallis house.

There were three tables, with white paper cloths and lamb on every platter.

Costa sat at the head of the middle table with his back to the wall.

Aris sat halfway down the side, as he did every year, in the chair his nephew had given him.

I sat at his right.

Eleni was not at the table.

She was in the kitchen with the door closed.

Costa stood for the toast.

He lifted his glass and said a few warm words about family.

He spoke of the cousins who ran the yards, and of his uncle's long life.

He said Dimitri's name.

He said it softly, and the whole hall bowed its head.

I put down my fork.

"I have something to say," I said.

I did not stand yet.

I said it in my ordinary voice, and it went down the whole length of the hall.

Costa looked at me kindly.

"Thalia," he said. "Of course. A word for the bride."

A few people laughed.

I stood up.

"I'm not the bride," I said. "I'm the Mavrakis closer."

"You all know what I am," I said. "I'm going to tell you four things, and then I'll sit."
