Chapter 10: Under the Table
On the twelfth day Luca called four capos to the long dining table and sat me at his right hand.
"You'll want to hear this," he said that morning, buttoning his cuffs. "It's about you."
"Then I'll sit where I can see their faces."
"That's why I put you there."
The men arrived at ten, in dark coats, with the smell of cold air and cigarettes.
None of them looked at me for longer than manners allowed.
Silvio set a pot of espresso in the center of the table and took the chair on Luca's left.
The room was the same room where I had eaten the wedding lamb.
The windows were grey and the fire was lit, and the tablecloth was white linen, heavy, long enough to hide my knees.
"Gentlemen," Luca said. "Thank you for coming."
He spoke for ten minutes about the piers.
I knew the piers.
I had typed my father's berth schedules since I was nineteen.
I could see the cold-storage yard in my head.
I only half listened.
His hand had come to rest on the linen, and then slid out of sight.
It landed on my knee.
I did not move.
He kept speaking in his calm, even voice.
"The contract gives the Costanzo house until the fourteenth day. Two days from now."
