Chapter 15: Sunday Dinner
Raffaela's POV
Gemma came to the Cove Neck house on Sunday with a list.
She had written it on the back of a hardware store receipt, in the blue ink of the pen she kept in her cardigan pocket.
Luca stood at the head of the long kitchen table with his sleeves buttoned and read it twice.
"One," Gemma said. "My own key to the gate."
"Yes."
"Two. My own phone, and nobody reads it."
"Yes," Luca said.
"Three. No guard. Not at the flat, not at the grocery store, not on the ferry. If I want a man behind me, I'll ask for one."
Luca's mouth went tight.
"Gemma."
"You said yes to the first two without blinking," Gemma said.
"The first two cost me nothing."
"Luca." She put the receipt down. "A year ago somebody took me off a sidewalk. I know what it costs. I'm asking you to let me be afraid on my own."
Rosalba stopped stirring the pot and crossed herself.
Silvio took off his glasses and polished them on his tie.
Luca looked at his sister for a long time.
"Four?" he said at last.
"There's no four."
"There's always a four."
She grinned.
"A lemon tree. In the greenhouse. I want to see one grow."
His shoulders came down.
"Yes," he said. "To all of it."
"Even three?"
"Even three," he said. "If I see a man of mine within a block of you, you may break his nose."
"I will."
"I know."
Gemma came around the table and put her arms around his waist, and he held her with his chin on her curls.
