Chapter 9: Silk
He took two days to answer me.
On the eighth night he locked the door of his bedroom.
He put the key on the dresser where I could see it, and took off his tie.
It was grey silk, dull and heavy, and it hung from his hand.
"Last chance to say no," Luca said.
"You said you ask once."
"I'm not asking. I'm telling you where the key is."
I looked at the key.
I looked at him.
"Tie me," I said.
"Say it with the rest."
"Tie my wrists to the bed. Then do what you like to me, and when you're done, ask me if I want to leave."
His throat moved.
He came to the bed slowly.
I was sitting on the edge in his shirt, which Rosalba would have crossed herself over, and nothing under it.
He took my right hand and kissed the inside of the wrist, where the ink from the contract had long since washed away.
"Lie back."
I lay back.
He drew my arms above my head, and laid the silk across both wrists, and wound it twice.
He didn't pull it tight.
He knotted it to the carved post at the head of the bed, and checked it with two fingers.
"Move them."
I pulled.
The silk held, soft and unyielding.
A flush ran through me from my scalp to my knees.
"Good," he said.
He stood back and looked at me.
He took his time, and I let him, because I couldn't do anything else.
Then he began to unbutton the shirt I was wearing, one button at a time, from the bottom.
The cloth fell open.
He pushed it off my shoulders, so that it lay under my back.
I was bare and tied, lying in the lamplight in front of a man who was still fully dressed.
"Look at you," he said quietly.
