Chapter 16: Church Supper
The Friday supper at the fire hall smelled of fried onions and butter from the parking lot.
Long folding tables ran the length of the room under the fluorescent lights, and the whole borough sat at them with paper plates.
A woman in a hairnet ladled haluski from a roasting pan.
Another one stacked pierogi in rows on a steel tray.
Milan and I had come in separately, ten minutes apart, as I had told him to.
The office had my answer, and I was due back there Monday at eight a.m.
Now I sat with the Jergens church lady on one side and an old man from the Thursday stools on the other.
Milan sat three tables over with his hat on his knee.
He didn't look at me.
I had told him not to, and he did exactly what I said, which made my face hot.
"Eat, Carly," the church lady said. "You're all bones."
I ate.
The haluski was salty and soft, and I had a second helping of pierogi before I knew it.
For the first time in three weeks I tasted what was on my fork.
Then Rick's laugh came across the hall, loud and wet.
He sat at the next table with a ball cap on the back of his head and three men from his excavating crew.
A beer he'd smuggled in somebody's coffee cup.
"Frank's not cold a month," he said, to the table, in a voice meant for the room, "and Milan Drabik is sniffing around his money."
The hall went quiet from the middle outward.
"He's old enough to be her father," Rick said.
Somebody's fork hit a plate.
At the next table I saw Milan's hand close around the brim of his hat.
