Chapter 19: Fifty-Five Miles of Phone
Milan's POV
She called at eleven-thirty.
I had been lying on top of the quilt in my clothes since nine, with Gus across my feet and the phone on my chest.
I picked up before it finished the first ring.
"It's quiet," Carly said.
Her voice was small and tired and about fifty-five miles away.
"Where are you?"
"On the mattress. The radiator's knocking. I haven't lit your kindling."
"Light it tomorrow," I said.
"I can't. It's a gas building, Milan, there's a sign about it."
"Then put it on the windowsill and look at it."
She laughed, a little wet.
I shut my eyes and put my free hand over them.
I had driven home from her father's house that morning with the whole of my body still in the kitchen.
I had fed the dog, and sat in the truck in my own barnyard with the engine off for twenty minutes.
The cab smelled of her.
"Tell me what you're wearing," I said.
"You don't have to do that."
"I know."
"I mean it. We can just talk," she said.
"I know that too," I said. "Tell me."
She drew a breath.
"One of my old T-shirts. A Penguins one. And underwear."
"What color?"
"Gray," Carly said.
"Cotton."
"Milan."
"You wore gray cotton the day I took your bra off in your father's kitchen," I said, "and I've thought about it for two weeks."
She didn't say anything for a moment.
"Is the door locked?" I said.
"There's nobody to lock it against."
"Is it locked, Carly?"
"Yes," she whispered.
"Good. Is the light on?"
"The lamp."
"Leave it on. I want you to see your own hands," I told her.
