Chapter 13: Dessert Course

The invitation came on Wednesday, on cream card stock, in a hand I knew from fifteen Christmas cards.

"Kent's mother requests the pleasure of your company at a brunch to celebrate the engagement of her son, Kent, and Miss Victoria Doherty. Saturday, eleven o'clock, the Hillcrest Club terrace."

Under it, in blue ink, she had added one more line.

"You will want to clear the air in front of the people you embarrassed."

I read it twice and held it out to Rafe.

"She wants me on my knees," I said.

"Then don't go."

"Two hundred thousand people watched me hit a girl's hand in forty seconds of video."

"You didn't hit her."

"I know. The members of the Hillcrest Club don't."

He turned the card over, and there was nothing on the back.

"What do you want?" he said.

"I want a room back."

He nodded slowly.

"Then I'm your plus one," he said.

On Saturday I wore a green dress that Kent had never seen, and Rafe wore the black suit from the funeral, with the torn sleeve stitched.

The terrace was glass on three sides, with white tablecloths and sixty people eating eggs.

They stopped eating when I came through the door.

Victoria sat at the head table in pale pink, with Kent's hand on her shoulder and my ring on her finger.

Kent's mother rose from her chair, and she did not look at Rafe at all.

"June," she said, loud enough for the back tables. "I'm glad you came to make amends."

"Thank you for the invitation."

"Everyone here is ready to hear it."

She folded her hands and waited.

Sixty forks lay down on sixty plates.

"I'm sorry about one thing," I said.

Her mouth softened into a smile.

"I'm sorry I didn't look at the guest list for your son's bachelor weekend," I said. "It would have told me he spent it in Victoria's condo."

Somebody dropped a spoon.

"That is a lie," Kent's mother said.

"It's a Friday with frost on the windshield. Ask your son."

Kent took his hand off Victoria's shoulder.
