Chapter 7: Her Couch, Her Bed

I wrote back to Ross with one hand.

"Tomorrow, nine, the diner on Fifth. Alone."

Then I put the phone face down on the counter and looked at the man standing in my kitchen with no shirt on.

"Not yet," Rafe said, as if he was trying out the words.

"It's been about six hours," I said.

He laughed.

I hadn't known his laugh would be low and rough.

I spent that day the way you spend a day after a funeral.

I washed the dishes.

I stripped the bed.

I stood in the bathroom and looked at the wedding dress in the bathtub, and I took it out, folded it into a trash bag, and carried it to the dumpster behind the building.

Rafe went down with me and carried the other end.

He didn't say anything.

He just held the lid open.

When we came back up, the light in my apartment had turned gold.

I shut the door and locked it, and I turned around.

"I'm myself now," I said.

He looked at me from across the room.

"I know," he said. "I noticed."

I crossed to him.

I put both hands in his hair and pulled his mouth down to mine, and this time neither of us was slow.

He lifted me.

My legs went around his waist, and he carried me into the bedroom with my back against his forearm, kissing me the whole way.

He laid me on the bed I had just made.

He pulled my shirt up over my head.

He looked at me for a second with his lips parted.

"God, June," he said.

"Don't talk," I said. "Touch me."

He did.

His hands were big and calloused, and they moved over my breasts.

He took one nipple into his mouth and sucked, and I arched off the mattress and grabbed the sheet.
