Chapter 10: The Clause

The Maddox dining room seated twenty-four.

Tonight it held eight.

Gerald sat at the head of the table under a portrait of a stern old man with Ezra's brow.

Colby was on his right with a bandage on his lip, and my father was on his left, sweating through his collar.

Two older cousins sat near the end, and beside them a lawyer in a gray suit with a leather folder.

Ezra took the other end of the table, so far from Gerald that they had to raise their voices.

I sat at Ezra's right.

Nobody had asked me to.

"Let us begin," Gerald said, and put on his warmest voice. "We are family. And family should not have a misunderstanding over something already settled."

He nodded at the lawyer.

The lawyer opened the folder and slid a thick packet of paper down the table.

It stopped in front of me.

"Miss Brannigan," he said. "The marriage agreement between your father and the family, signed three years ago. For your acknowledgment."

I looked at it.

It was forty pages, stapled.

Across the table my father had stopped breathing.

My mother had told me to read every page.

I picked up the first one and started to read.

Gerald laughed.

"Sadie, dear, there is no need to read it all. The lawyer will summarize."

"I'd like to read it myself."

"It's very long."

"I'm a quick reader."

I turned the page.

Colby shifted in his seat.

The room was silent except for the sound of paper.
