Chapter 14: The Page She Signed

Ezra's POV

Martin Brannigan kept me waiting forty minutes in his own study.

I did not mind.

The shelves behind his desk had a long bare rectangle where eleven boxes had stood for thirteen years.

The dust there was lighter than the dust around it.

I sat in his chair and looked at that rectangle until I heard him in the hall.

He stopped in the doorway with his phone in his hand.

"That's my seat, Mr. Maddox."

"It was."

I let him stand there.

He had a good suit and a red face, and he was working hard to make his hands behave.

"I got a photograph this morning," Martin said. "My daughter in a torn blouse leaving a hotel. I think you know what I'm going to do with it."

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Then stand."

I took a folded paper out of my jacket and laid it on his blotter.

"This is a note for four million dollars," I said. "It was Gerald's. His bank sold it to a holding company on Tuesday, and the holding company is mine. Your firm owes it. Your payroll is on the line."

He did not touch the paper.

"You bought my debt."

"I bought your debt."

"Why?"

"So you would know who you owe."

His face went through three colors.

Then he started to laugh, short and ugly.
