Chapter 19: Saturday

On Saturday at four, my father held the wedding without a bride.

He had not cancelled the string quartet, the roses, the three hundred chairs or the guests who had flown in.

He had simply let the hour arrive, to see whether I would come.

I did.

I stood in the doorway of the Grand's ballroom in my wedding gown, an ivory column of silk the seamstress had pinned on a Thursday, and the room turned around to look at me.

Preston waited at the altar in a gray morning coat, with a face that had learned nothing.

The judge stood beside him.

It was a different judge, a younger one, with an uneasy stoop.

My father sat in the front row, in the seat for the father of the bride.

I began to walk.

The quartet started the wedding march and then faltered, because nobody had told them what to play for a woman walking alone.

I walked all the way up the aisle, past the roses and the guests who had seen the clip the night before and the ones who hadn't.

I stopped at the foot of the altar.

"Thank you for coming," I said. "I know many of you came a long way."

My voice carried.

I had been giving it to boardrooms for a decade, and it did what I told it.

"There will be no wedding today. I'm not marrying Preston Rowe, who is married to someone else."

A murmur rolled through the chairs.

"I'm also not marrying anyone my father chooses."
