The men carrying my mother's mirror stopped halfway up the steps.
They looked at Saverio and set it down.
Corrado came around the car and stood a little behind my left shoulder.
He didn't say anything.
Saverio stopped two steps below me.
Close up, his eyes were red at the rims.
There was a nick on his jaw where he'd shaved too fast.
"Rosaria."
"You're on my mother's steps, Saverio."
"I know where I am."
He looked up at the balconies.
Every one of them was full now.
Somebody's grandmother had brought out a kitchen chair to sit on.
He didn't lower his voice.
I think he wanted them to hear.
"I made a mistake," he said.
The street went so quiet I heard a moped two roads over.
"I wanted you to feel what I felt. For five years. Watching you with him. Watching you choose him."
"I wanted you to know what it was like. And then I couldn't stop."
He held the box out.
The diamond was the size of my thumbnail.
