Chapter 28: My Father's Hand

"I don't have to ask him," I said.

There was a long silence on the line.

Then Graziella laughed, very softly.

"So you knew. You stood on his steps and paid his debt, and you knew."

"Goodnight, Graziella."

"He cried when he did it. Did you know that part? Saverio told me. He cried, and he still used his best pen."

I hung up.

Corrado was in the doorway.

He'd heard my side.

"Tomorrow," I said. "Trapani."

"I'll drive."

"No. I'll take your car, if you'll let me. He should see me come alone."

He put the keys in my hand.

On Thursdays my father plays scopa.

He has played it at the same bar on the harbor road since before I was born.

The same corner table under the fan, the same three men, the same deck with the bent queen.

I parked outside at four in the afternoon.

Through the window I could see him in his shirtsleeves, frowning at his cards.

The bar was half full.

Fishermen off the morning boats. Two old women with almond granita. The owner drying glasses.
