Chapter 16: Brett Decides

Brett walked the length of the hall, and two hundred people stepped out of his way.

He stopped at the little AV table beside the stage and plugged his phone into the speaker cable.

"Brett, honey," Sheila said into the microphone. "Go home and sleep this off."

"No, Mother."

It was the first time I had ever heard him say it.

Sheila's smile twitched.

He pressed play, and Kendra's voice came out of the hall's speakers, clear as a bell.

"It's June's birthday. Hold her hands over the candle and say it slowly. Say the lake line. She'll cry, and then she'll never go anywhere."

A gasp rose from the tables.

Kendra stood frozen beside the stage.

Brett pressed the next one.

"If anything from Crater Lake ever comes to your house, you bring it to me, Brett. Don't ask me why, don't ask June, and don't ever let her near the mailbox."

I felt Eli's hand close around mine.

I had not known I was reaching for it.

"This is edited," Kendra said, too loud. "He's drunk, he's making things up."

"I'm not edited," Brett said. "I'm just late."

He pressed the third one.

The recording was dated the night before the party.

Kendra's voice was warm and light.

"Tomorrow, after the cake, we let her find us. I'll text her that I'm stuck in Portland. She'll run out crying, and she'll come straight to me, because she always does."

A long pause on the recording, the sound of ice in a glass.

"Then I'll be the only one she has. Same as always."

The hall had gone so quiet that I could hear the paper lanterns turning on their strings.
