Chapter 18: Say It Again

June's POV

"I'd have waited," Eli said, louder, to the dark.

His voice rang off the stone wall and went out over the empty lake.

I walked up to him until I was close enough to see his breath.

"Nothing about the day after," I said. "Those were the terms."

"I know."

"You wrote them. I only said them out loud."

"I know that too."

"Then you broke them in the front seat of a truck." I was shaking, and I hated it. "So now what? You want me to be grateful?"

"I want you to do whatever you want."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Then here's what I want."

I took his jacket in both fists and pulled his face down to mine.

I kissed him so hard our teeth knocked.

He made a sound, and his arms closed around me and lifted me clean off the gravel.

"You broke the rule," I said into his mouth. "Break the rest of them."

He carried me to the truck and set me on the tailgate.

The metal was freezing through my dress, and I did not care.

He pushed the green skirt up to my waist and went down on his knees on the gravel in front of me.

"Not here," I said. "Somebody will see."

"There's no one on this mountain."

"Take me home."

His eyes lifted to mine, dark in the starlight.

"Say it again."

"Take me home, Eli."

It was the first time I had called the cabin that.

He heard it.

We did not speak on the road.

His hand lay on my thigh the whole way, and I put mine over it.

Inside cabin four he kicked the door shut and pinned me against it.

His mouth was on my throat before the latch had clicked.

I dragged his jacket off his shoulders, and he stripped my dress over my head and threw it across the room.

Then he stopped and cupped my face.
