Chapter 21: The Complaint

The Rim Village visitor center was full of tourists in rain jackets, and every one of them was watching the information desk.

Kendra stood there in a neat navy dress with a folder in her hands.

The park superintendent stood across from her, a gray man in a green uniform with a pen behind his ear.

Eli stood to one side with his arms at his sides and his face shut.

I pushed through the door, and Kendra saw me.

For one second her eyes flashed.

Then she turned back to the superintendent with her voice trembling.

"I'm so sorry to make a scene, sir. I only came because I'm frightened for my friend."

"Ms. Maddock," the superintendent said wearily. "You've told me."

"He wrote to her four times, sir. A girl he'd never met."

She opened her folder and laid out four photocopies of the cream envelopes.

"Four years of letters from a man six years older, with the park's name on them, who then gave her a cabin the minute she was alone and vulnerable. I think it's called stalking. I think you should look at that."

The tourists drew a collective breath.

Eli did not say a word.

His jaw worked, and I understood that he was not going to defend himself, because defending himself would drag me into it.

"Ranger Hautala," the superintendent said, "I'm going to ask for your badge until this is reviewed."

"Sir."

"I'm sorry."

Eli unclipped the gold badge from his jacket with perfectly steady fingers and set it on the desk.

"No," I said.

It came out louder than I meant.

Every head turned.

"Don't take it. He didn't do anything. Those letters are a fellowship offer, and I won it when I was eighteen."

"June," Kendra said, so gently. "Honey. You're not well."
