Chapter 11: What She Chooses
On Saturday I bought a pack of index cards and four colors of Sharpie, because I deal with fear by making a chart.
"You're color-coding my trauma," Maddie said.
"It's how I cope."
We sat at my kitchen table at nine in the morning with her phone between us.
The coffee was strong enough to hold a spoon.
The phone showed the list: eleven voice memos, each with a date.
I had written one card for each.
Red for the ones where Brandon touched her.
Blue for the ones where he only talked.
Green for anything with another person in it.
"Okay," I said. "Here's my idea."
"No."
"You haven't heard it."
"You want to stand up and say it yourself." She pulled her knees onto the chair. "You'd be great. You'd be calm and clear and everyone would say, 'Well, Hannah Kruse is a sensible girl.'"
"That's a good thing."
"It's the worst thing." She tapped the table. "Think about it, Han. If it's you, then they've got a new story to tell. 'Poor Hannah is protecting her sister. Poor Hannah is so loyal.' They'll pat your hand and say you're being brave."
"That isn't what would happen."
"It's what always happens to the nice one."
I opened my mouth.
I closed it.
"They already believe you believe me," she said. "That's the one thing nobody doubts about you. What they have to hear is him. And what they have to hear is me, saying it, with my own mouth, in my own voice."
"You said you'd fall apart."
