Chapter 12: The Check

Sam brought Maddie's car back on Sunday night.

I heard it before I saw it, a blue Corolla coming up my lane in the dusk.

Sam was driving it with the seat all the way back and his knees up near the wheel.

He parked beside my porch and climbed out.

"It was sitting in the church lot with a note on it," he said. "Figured a barn was a better place for it than a bulletin board."

"You drove her car across town."

"I drive a truck with a cow-sized box on the back. This was the easy one."

Maddie had gone to bed at eight.

I'd made tea.

We sat on the porch steps with the screen door behind us and the dark coming in over the cornstalks.

Neither of us said anything for a while.

"I need to tell you something," I said.

"Okay."

"It's not a good thing."

"Those are usually the ones people tell me."

I looked at my hands.

"In July, the Meyers had a weekend at their lake cabin. Fourth of July. Maddie went. I went Friday, and I had to be home for a school thing on Saturday, so she stayed."

"Okay."

"At 11:42 that Saturday night, she texted me. 'Can you come get me.' That was all."

The tea was warm against my palms.

"I wrote back, 'It's one weekend. Be nice to his family.' And then I went to bed."

Sam waited.

"I left her there," I said. "I told her to be nice."

"You answered the question she asked."

"She never asked a question."

"She did." He said it plainly. "'Can you come get me.' That's a question, Hannah. You answered a different one."

It was the first time he had used my name.

I felt it all the way to my feet.

"I didn't ask what was wrong," I said. "I could have asked. It would have taken barely a moment."
