Chapter 13: May Second
I put the kettle on because my hands needed a job.
My mother sat at my kitchen table in her church coat and her nightgown, with her purse in her lap.
She had never once sat in my kitchen without being asked.
The check lay between us under the lamp.
"Tell me the way you'd tell Dad," I said.
She looked at the check for a long time.
"Maddie came to the house on the twenty-third," she said. "She sat on the stool by the pantry and told me."
"And you said?"
"I said sit down, Madeline."
She laughed once, a dry breath with nothing in it.
"The next morning I called Dee. I didn't know who else to call. She's the one I call."
"What did you say?"
"That Maddie had said something terrible about Brandon, and I didn't know what to do."
"And Dee?"
"She came over at ten with a pound cake." My mother pressed her thumbnail into the purse strap. "She cried, Hannah. Real tears. She said this had happened to Brandon once before, with a girl who couldn't stand that he'd chosen someone else. She said it would kill him to be called that twice."
"So you believed her."
"I believed it would be terrible if it were true." She said it like she had practiced. "That's not the same, but it felt the same."
The kettle began to tick.
"Then on the second of May she brought an envelope," my mother said. "She said, 'You carried the deposits alone, Linda. Let me help with the girls.'"
"For the girls."
"I thought she meant a wedding present."
"Mom."
"I thought it, Hannah. I told myself I thought it." She looked up. "I cashed it on the Monday. I haven't spent a dollar. It's in a separate account, and I can't look at the statements."
