Chapter 15: Public Comment
The school board met in the cafeteria, at the long table where the lunch ladies fold napkins.
Five adults sat behind it on plastic chairs built for third graders.
Their knees came up almost to their chins.
I would have laughed on any other night.
I sat in the second row beside the principal, with my cardigan buttoned and my hands flat on my knees.
About forty people had come.
I knew half of them by their children's names.
Sam sat alone on the back bench with a thermos and his coat still on.
Dee was not in the room.
Dee never goes to the room where it happens.
She sends a hand.
The board president read the agenda item in the flat voice of a man reading the church announcements.
"Item four. A communication regarding a staff member's family circumstances, with an attached law enforcement report. The board will consider whether to place the staff member on leave."
He lifted a sheet of paper.
"The communication is from Concerned Our Savior's Parents."
He read the whole letter aloud, down to the mental health crisis.
Forty people studied the cafeteria floor.
"Miss Kruse has asked to speak," he said. "Three minutes."
I stood up.
I had written a speech at lunch and left it in my desk.
"I'm not going to talk about my family," I said. "I have one question."
The president nodded for me to go ahead.
"Who signed the letter?"
"Signatures are confidential."
"Then I'd like to ask them to stand."
The room went still.
"It's a letter from concerned parents," I said. "I teach twenty-two of your children. I'd like to look at the concerned parents."
Nobody moved.
A folding chair creaked.
I waited, the way I do when a child has to decide whether to tell me the truth.
