Chapter 16: Hands Flat
The cousin from Green Bay said it four times at my kitchen table.
"She threw herself at me."
The first time she whispered it.
The second time she looked at the salt shaker.
"Again," said Maddie, gently, across the table.
"She threw herself at me."
"Look at me when you say it."
"I can't look at you. You'd be Maddie."
"Then look at Han. She's a teacher. She's used to being looked at while people lie."
The cousin turned to me, and I held very still.
"She threw herself at me," she said, flat and loud, like a boy reading a line he had been handed.
Then her hands came up off her lap on their own.
They stopped in the air in front of her, palms out, shaking.
She saw them and froze.
"That's what happened," she said. "That's what my hands did. He had one on the back of my head. I want to say that part, because if I don't it isn't true."
"Then say it," Maddie said.
"Will you be near me?"
"I'll be at the microphone first." Maddie put her hand over the cousin's. "Then I'm yours."
When she left, the Honda's taillights went down my lane.
At bedtime I carried a pillow into the spare room.
It was my old iron bed, the one from the room we'd shared when we were small.
Mom had given it to me when I bought the farmhouse.
Maddie lay on the wall side with the quilt up to her ears and Gary the cactus on the nightstand.
"Move over," I said.
"There's a whole house."
"I know."
She moved.
We lay in the dark, a foot apart, looking up at a ceiling I had never really looked at.
