Chapter 20: Parking Lot

"You've cost me everything," Brandon said again.

He said it to me, though I hadn't said a word.

"Everything I built. My mother's name. The agency. Half this town is on my books."

"Brandon," said Sam, from behind my shoulder.

"I'm not talking to you."

"No."

"I know what this is." Brandon's voice climbed. "I know exactly what this is. You were with him the whole time, Han. That's why you walked."

It was such a clean, small lie that I almost admired it.

"Sam Frye didn't say my first name until last Sunday," I said. "You told sixty people my sister was drunk."

The side door opened behind us, and the hall began to spill out into the lot.

Coats, scarves, men in feed caps, a woman carrying a child asleep on her shoulder.

They came out in twos and threes and stopped on the asphalt when they saw him.

Brandon saw them too.

I watched him do what he does, which is read a room.

He put his hands out, palms up, and smiled.

"Folks. Folks, this has been a very hard night. I'd ask everyone to go home and think about what they heard in there. I carry a lot of you. I'd hate for this to get personal."

For a moment nobody answered.

It was so quiet I could hear the Legion sign buzz.

A pickup at the end of the row rolled down its window.

The man in the feed cap leaned his arm out.

"Brandon," he said. "I'll be by Monday for my file."

"What?"

"My policy. The barn, the herd, the house. I'll pick up the file."

Brandon laughed, short and shocked.

"Come on. You laughed at my joke at the school."

"It wasn't a joke," said the farmer.

"Mine too," said a man by the next truck.

"And ours."
