Chapter 21: The Ring

Sam stopped the truck and left the engine running.

"Stay here," he said.

"No."

He looked at me.

"It's my mailbox," I said.

"Okay."

Maddie woke with her cheek against the window and said, "Is it Mom?"

"It's Dee."

"Of course it is," she said, and sat up and buttoned her coat.

The Buick's door opened before we reached it.

Dee got out slowly, in the pink suit with a smear of tartar sauce on the cuff.

The casserole dish was gone.

In her hands she held a piping bag, rolled shut with a rubber band.

I knew it before she held it up to the headlights.

The blue buttercream had been washed out.

The ring lay in the bottom of the clear plastic, clean as a tooth.

"Hannah," she said. "I wanted to come tonight, while it was still raw. I think that's best."

"It's late."

"It won't take long, hon." Her voice was low and warm, as if we were two women at a funeral lunch. "I want to put this right."

Sam came around the front of the truck and stood a little behind me.

He didn't say anything.

"I know what happened in there," Dee said. "I know it looked a certain way. Linda was overwrought. The Green Bay girl is a very sad story. But we're all family in this town, and families repair."

She took a step forward.

"I'll make it simple. I'll pay Maddie's deposit and first month wherever she likes. I'll pay for a good attorney, if you feel you need one. I'll speak to the board. I'll see to it the church puts a kind word in Sunday's bulletin."

"For what?"

"For something small." She smiled. "On Sunday, you and Maddie come to Our Savior's. You stand with me at the bulletin table. You tell people it was a family misunderstanding that went too far, and you forgive my son in front of everyone."
