Chapter 22: Not Yet
I walked down the lane in my party shoes with a flashlight and nobody beside me.
Sam stayed on the porch.
He had said, "I'll be here," and nothing else, which was the right amount.
The tan Mercury sat at the bottom, beside the crooked mailbox, with its engine off and its window down.
My mother had both hands on the wheel at ten and two.
She wore the church coat over the nightgown again.
She didn't look at me when I came up.
"I'm not coming in," she said. "I only wanted to be on the road where you could see me."
"I can see you."
"Good."
We stayed like that for a minute, her in the car, me in the cold.
"I'm not going to ask you to forgive me," she said. "I thought about it for the whole drive. I'd like to, but it wouldn't be fair. You'd have to say yes, and you're a good girl, and you'd say it."
"Mom."
"So I won't ask."
There was a sound behind me on the gravel.
Maddie had come down the lane in her green coat, over her pajamas, with her hair flat on one side.
She stopped three feet from the Mercury.
My mother turned her head slowly.
Her face looked like a house with the lights off.
"Madeline," she said.
"I'm here."
"I won't ask for anything. I just wanted you to know I'm not going anywhere."
"Not yet," Maddie said.
My mother's mouth closed.
"That's what I've got for you tonight," Maddie said. "Not yet. It doesn't mean never. It means I can't, and I'm not going to pretend I can so you'll feel better."
"All right."
"But you said you wanted to do something."
"I did?"
"In there. With the check. You said you were done choosing the deposits."
