Chapter 24: Plates
On Sunday at five in the morning I crossed County Road K in my robe and my boots.
His light was on.
I knocked on the Zeller farmhouse door with my knuckles, and Sam opened it in his socks, holding a coffee pot.
"Fire?" he said.
"No."
"Calf?"
"No."
He looked at my robe, and then at my face, and set the pot down on the counter behind him.
"Okay," he said.
"I wrote a speech," I said. "I left it at school."
"You usually do."
"So I'll say it plainly." My heart was going like a washing machine. "I love you, Sam."
He didn't move.
"I figured it out at my sink, the night you picked up the same plate three times. You didn't close the inch. I've never wanted anyone to close an inch so much in my life."
His mouth shook.
"I wanted to say it back where it was quiet," I said. "You said yours in front of a polka band. I'm not that brave. I'm just early."
"That's brave."
"Don't be nice about it."
"Okay," he said.
He stepped out onto the porch in his socks, in the cold.
"Can I?" he said.
"Yes," I said, before he had finished, and he took my face in both hands.
It wasn't a matter of counting seconds.
It was a long time, and the sky began to turn gray behind the barn.
Dinner was at four.
The table in my dining room had a leaf in it, which was new.
Sam had found it in the loft of the Zeller barn, wrapped in a feed sack.
It fit my old oak table.
"Three people don't need a leaf," I said, when he carried it over.
"It's for the fourth," he said.
